Thoughts on Developing a Website for Your Company

Certain requirements of building a corporate website and why you should make sure you do not commit these mistakes

As long as there are humans, there will be companies and as long as there are companies they would need a corporate website , today or tomorrow.

A website helps you build credibility among your customers, vendors and peers. A website helps you increase your sales, leads and profits. A website provides an online face to your company.

This is the truth of the marketing world.

That being said (and hopefully taken seriously), let us now discuss certain components and related matters of designing and developing a corporate website.

Shine or Substance?

Anyone interested in your company would not be viewing your website to see how beautifully you have designed it or how wonderful it comes across. They are more interested in knowing how your company comes across and how wonderful and profitable it would be to begin an association with your company.

To cut a long story short, concentrate more on the substance of your website than shine. Put substance in your corporate website and you are well on your way to build a solid online brand for yourself

Great Websites Have Purposes, Little Websites Have Wishes

As a business builder or marketing professional you are clearly aware of the distinction between purpose and wish.

A website without a purpose is not a joy forever; in fact, it is a constant source of confusion and chaos for the owner.

Don't just wish to have something. Have a purpose and a corresponding plan and your wish will come true.

Decide the purpose of your corporate website right at the start. Is it to be informative, informative and persuasive, or lead generation? The answer to this question is mighty important before you start designing and developing your website.

Goethe said “a useless life is an early death”, I completely agree the same for useless websites.

Focus on the Customer

If your corporate website comes across as nervous, it’s cooked.

I’m not saying you need to go into high-pressure mode. Just ask the magic question: how can we help YOU (the customer) to win? This will help you build a solid corporate website. If the website hasn’t spoken with customers, it isn’t doing its job properly.

I know (and do endorse) that a corporate website does not have the luxury of long pages but the trick of focusing on the customer and conversations with readers can still be achieved with a little bit of forethought.

But be careful: do not let your user / visitor / customer get lost in a maze of hundreds of pages. A well-thought out information architecture and site structure is quite a necessity if you are planning to do have large number of pages. Check out the corporate websites of HP, Wipro etc to get an idea.

Consistency

Oscar Wilde once said “Consistency is the last refuge of the unimaginative.” But don’t let good ol’ Wilde’s words fool you when you are designing and developing a corporate website.

You need to be imaginative and creative in putting your message across but you also need to be consistent in providing the same level of care and attention to all aspects of your website.

Don’t fall into the trap of putting tremendous effort on one section of your website more prominence and completely ignoring another section.

For instance, customer support page might be less important to you than product sales section but for your reader it is not the case. Your readers want to know how you support her after she buys from you. Give it to her.

Avoid These like Plague

  • Fancy Link Colours
  • Orphan Pages
  • URLs that complicate matters
  • Outdated information
  • Long scroll
  • Dead Links
  • Counters
