Every human being has confessions. Things that burn deep inside and are just waiting to get out of the chest in the form of words strung together, hoping to unload the mind.
I'm no different. But my confessions are restricted to professional life and related chiefly to my work and my clients. So what better platform than my professional website to tell what I feel.
Confession # 1: I'm an evolving brand
I'm not living in self-pity or self-doubt but I confess I'm no A-list copywriter. It's true that I've had some successful campaigns but I'm no John Caples, Rosser Reeves, Raymon Rubicam, Claude Hopkins, Vic Schwab, David Ogilvy, Bob Bly, or Eugene Schwartz.
But I have devoured their copies and studied from them. I've been their disciple for too long to leave. They are the giants on whose shoulders I have tried to perch and look far into the art and science of response boosting copywriting.
For any student of copywriting with a couple of months free time on hand, I recommend a study of their copies and their techniques.
And I've tasted success on my own. My write-up on internet marketing has been featured in the Marketing Sherpa's Annual Wisdom From the Fields Report of 2007. But I still am a long way to go to become an A list copywriter.
Confession # 2: I love my city and my clients love it too!
That'd be Mangalore. For those in the dark, Mangalore is a beautiful (and that's a very objective assessment) city on the west coast of southern India. It should not be confused with the more illustrious Bangalore, the IT capital of India. Mangalore is a port town, 350 kms west of Bangalore.
Apart from the fact that I lived the first 23 years of my life here and know it like the back of my hand, the reason I love Mangalore is that the city has so much on offer.
True, for a party freak or one used to hustle bustle of a metro, initial days here would be boring. But for a relaxation freak there is a lot on offer.
There are beautiful beaches on one side and lush green hills on the other. It's a perfect combination for a writer / conceptualizer. Whenever a looming possibility of burnout or overwork appears, an evening on the beach or a hike into the hills is enough to get the spirits back.
Whenever I'm faced with a complicated problem or facing writer's block I head to the beach. Whenever I feel overworked, I take a ride to the hillside. And the best part is, the only spend on these rejuvenating trips is half a day's time.
Even my clients love Mangalore, albeit indirectly. Mangalore is one of the cities in India where you'll get almost everything, yet the cost of living is low still. Which helps me provide Bangalore standard (i.e. global standards) work at much lower cost than Bangalore. A happy situation for both my clients and I.
As a major educational hub, there is no shortage of talent in Mangalore. Two nationally recognised universities function in the area: Mangalore University and Manipal University (65 kms apart). Between these two universities every major stream of education is covered and every year, thousands of students graduate in almost every academic field discovered.
This combination of low cost of living and a vast talent pool has got Mangalore a place in India’s ’Top 5 emerging centres for global business’ along with Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Kochi and Vizag in a report by US-based outsourcing firm Alsbridge.
Confession # 3: I do what I love doing
I love writing, and I always wanted to be a writer of some sort. When I registered for my masters in mass communication studies, my goal was to be a newspaper reporter. 2 years of full time education polished me and enhanced my skills.
I'm grateful to all my classmates and lecturers in Manipal Institute of Communication who helped me and encouraged me to be myself and were a constant source of support and guidance.
When I finished studies I realised life a reporter was too dull; instead I chose marketing communications -- where the opportunities to make a name and release my full literary instincts were abundant. What better job than to write for a response, influence people's buying decisions, bring world's together.
There has not been a single boring moment since I joined the industry and it makes a sort of happy thought that as soon as I finish an article or a copy I can't wait to jump to the next. I just love what I do and do what I love!
Conclusion
